The answer is Yes and NO.

Yes it will affect you score as by not activating it and using it, you will not have any credit history to report which is 35% of your score as well as another 15% for length of history

No, it will not hurt your score because you have a higher credit limit and if you do not use it, your debt utilization score will be higher. This is the proportion of credit lines used (proportion of balances to total credit limits on certain types of revolving accounts)

If you cancel it you will lower your ratios and score will drop, and don't forget they have placed a hard inquiry on your credit report already to approve the account. So you would get hit with 2 factors that would lower your score.

Keep it, use if once a year and build a history. This would be your best move to not affect your score.

Stay out of the Credit Card Arena for at least a year or so then try it with a secured credit card from your bank.

As you noticed… there is life without a Credit Card.

Your regular ATM/Check Card can perform all the actions a regular credit card does… only difference is that the amounts charged are immediately paid for thru your checking account.

In the meantime… do something for your financial status with your bank. Open a regular savings account and put half of the money that you used to pay to the Credit Card Co. into the savings account.
Once you have sizable amounts in your savings accounts banks will be more willing to give you a credit card again.

A financially secure person has at least 6 months worth of living expenses sitting in a savings account plus has numerous other accounts for "emergencies" and for large, planned purchases.

This system beats having a Credit Card any day… you don't pay interest and you will sleep a lot better at night knowing that even if you lost your job… the world doesn't come to an end because you have funds to cover the downtime and you have plenty of time to look for a new job.

The type of card you choose is dependent upon how you plan on paying your card and what you're looking for. If you plan on paying your balance in full each month (and they calculate interest based on your average daily balance for one statement cycle instead of over a 2 month billing period) then there is no reason for you not to do cash back or points because even though those cards have higher interest rates if you're paying off in full every month by the payment due date you're not going to be charged finance charges.
